A wind turbine is a relatively simple device. The rotor blades catch the wind and pass the rotational energy onto a special drive shaft mechanism. The drive shaft propels an electrical generator, which brings an output of 500 - 1500kWh. The shaft is also equipped with an air brake and also a mechanical disc brake, which is used, if the air brake fails or the system must be repaired. The tower of the wind-powered device carries the actual mechanisms and rotor. Usually a high tower is used as with rising height the wind velocity increases. A modern wind power station has a tower of 40-60 meters height.
