Pioneer Block 14 Pinot Noir 2009. Category: Pinot Noir. Manufacturer: Saint Clair Wines, NZ Winemaking: The fruit was harvested when it had reached full physiological ripeness and maximum flavour maturity. At the winery the fruit was held cold for four days prior to ferment to help extract maximum flavour and to enhance colour stability. Selected yeasts were used to carry out the primary alcoholic fermentation during which the fermenting must was hand plunged up to six times daily. At dryness each batch was pressed to tank and then racked off gross lees to stainless steel tanks. The wine was then dropped into a mixture of 54% new French oak and older seasoned oak for ten months where it underwent malolactic fermentation. It was then blended and carefully prepared for bottling. Colour: Bright ruby red Aroma: Raspberry and plum complemented by lifted floral hints and a touch of spice. Palate: A luscious and elegant full palate with flavours of red cherry, raspberries and ripe red plums. Aging in French oak barrels has added a rich complex toasty finish. Cellaring: Perfect for drinking immediately this wine will continue to develop for at least another 5 years from vintage date. Food Match: This Pioneer Block Pinot Noir is perfectly matched with spring lamb or tuna. Vine Age: Approximately 10 years old. Regional Characteristics & contribution to Uniqueness of Flavours: The two areas selected for this wine were chosen for the complexity they add to the wine, the fragrant aromatics from the cooler Doctor's Creek area, with the concentration of fruit flavours from the very low yielding Ure Valley. Viticulture: The fruit was sourced from Saint Clair's own vineyard at Doctor's Creek and a small amount from the Ure Valley to add complexity. Alcohol: 13.5%.
